Canada Day in the Garden

A celebration of red and white blooms

Happy Canada Day

Canada Day in the Garden

It's true, this is where most people celebrate our nations birthday. In some form or another, we are enjoying the great outdoors when this July holiday comes around. For some, that's getting in touch with nature and pitching a tent. For others, it entails a BBQ, some cool beverages and spending time with our friends and family.

So since this is how we honor our countries big day, we thought we would take a wonder around the nursery and just see what plants and tree's are doing the same in our nations favorite colors.

Hydrangea

Let's start with this beauty! Hydrangea Paniculata 'Phantom' has the hugest flower heads in this species. Perhaps that's why they call it Phatom, for it's freakishly large blooms! It can get up to 2.5 m. if left unpruned. This showy hydrangea tree will produce flowers from July and August turning to a pale pink in fall. Gorgeous!

Dianthus | Carnation

These reliable evergreen perennials have the deepest red double blooms on a soft blue grass like foliage. Dianthus Scent 'First Passion' is a fragrant addtion to a sunny garden bed, perfect in mixed borders or cottage gardens. This is one tough plant, its deer and rabbit resistant, attracts butterflies, grows happily in poor soils and produces flowers from April till frost. That just about checked off everything off on your list right?

Leucanthemum | Shasta Daisy

We saw this one blooming in the perennial house and thought it was perfectly fitting to help us celebrate our nations birthday. Leucanthemum 'Lacrosse' has spoon like white petals with a golden center. Did you know that Lacrosse was our national sport? This plant does and he's a winner in the garden. Well behaved and compact growing only to 30 cm, it's perfect along borders and in rock gardens. Like Dianthus, deer and rabbits avoid it, but the butterflies and hummingbirds adore it!

Acer | Maple

It wouldn't be a Canada Day celebration without the guest of honor now would it? Besides being our national symbol and producing delcious sugary breakfast condiments, this jewel in Canada's crown is beloved for it's landscape quality and gorgeous color throughout the year. Acer Rubrum is a wonderful shade tree and there are several varieties that don't get to large if your trying to find a perfect tree for a small space garden. Show your national pride and come see our wide selection of beautiful Red Maples, one of these beauties deserves to go home to your garden.

From all of us here at Art's Nursery to all of you, Happy Canada Day.... EH!
