I have to say, no plant gets me as close to feeling like a kid in a candy store as bulbs do!! The enticingly colourful packages sing out the promise of Spring!!! While the plain coloured bulbs inside look mysterious. With shrubs or perennials I hum and haw take for-just-about-ever to pick one. With bulbs I get to take that leap of faith…and I have to say, I am seldom disappointed!

Here are some new selections that I have my eye on and in fact, some may be coming home to my garden…how to choose…

New Narcissus Varieties for 2015

Green Eyes Narcissus

The first on my list is the elegantly fragrant and aptly named Green Eyes Narcissus. It has lovely snow white petals with a short slightly ruffled cup and a deep shamrock green eye. This Narcissus will grow to approx. 16” in height.

White Lion Double Narcissus

White Lion is a fully double Narcissus with longer white petals and shorter buttercup yellow petals making it look like it’s lit up from the centre. This Narcissus will grow to approx. 16 inches in height.

Galactic Star Trumpet Narcissus

Galactic Star is a long lasting, fragrant, bicolour trumpet Narcissus with slightly backward curved yellow petals with white towards the centre. The longer ruffled trumpet starts out soft yellow and then brightens to white making this a Narcissus that will most definitely turn heads!! This height on this one is 16 inches.

New Tulip Varieties for 2015

Apricot Delight Tulips

Apricot Delight Tulips are a soft pinky apricot with golden apricot edging on the petals. They grow to 14 inches in height and hold up beautifully as cut flowers.

Suncatcher Triumph Tulip

If you want a bit of early heat try the Suncatcher Triumph Tulip. This one grows about 16 inches high and looks like a reverse flame with sunshine yellow petals with bright ember red edges.

Tender Whisper Triumph Tulip

I can picture this elegantly feminine Tender Whisper Triumph Tulip in my patio planter underplanted with some simple white groundcover like an Iberis (Candytuft) or even an Alyssum depending on the timing of my bulbs as I often put them in a bit later after Christmas. This beauty grows to 18 inches high.

More New Tulip Varieties for 2015

Pretty Princess Tulips

Pretty Princess Tulip is a strain of the very famous Princess Irene Tulip from the Netherlands. This eyecatcher is dark pink along the veins with a softer pink edging. It is a lower growing tulip to 12 inches in height.

Tulip Humilis Alba Coreulea Oculata

Humilis alba coreulea oculata is a beautifully naturalizing botanical tulip reaching a demure 4 inches in height. I am pretty excited it looks like the bloom time will match perfectly with the Rembrandt. This lovely little tulip has soft white petals with deep purple petals and what is even more attractive to me is the fact that they hold their lovely little faces open.

Disneyland Paris Double Fosteriana Tulips

Disneyland Paris Fosteriana Tulip bulbs produce striking flowers in shades of orange with a light green stripe on the outside. As a Fosteriana, it is early blooming and features wide petals on strong stems. Great for cut flowers. Best planted in full to part sun. Grows to 16 inches in height. 6 bulbs per pack.

These tulip varieties are also available online

New Hyacinth Varieties for 2015

Rembrandt Hyacinth

Rembrandt Hyacinth is a very fragrant striking bicolour Hyacinth with bold deep purple florets with white edging. This grows to 10 inches in height. I am going to try a pairing of Rembrandt Hyacinth with my next bulb on the list…Humilis alba coreulea oculata.

Dark Dimension Hyacinth

For those that love the dark and mysterious, we have the Dark Dimension Hyacinth. A very fragrant deep dark purple almost reaching a velvety black in colour. This hyacinth grows to 10 inches in height and would be spectacular mixed in with some solid white or even hot pink hyacinths.

Choosing just a few of these is going to be difficult. Like that kid in the candy store I want them all!! Happy planting and good luck with YOUR choices! The best selection is available from September through Early November. It is a great time to plant in fall as soon as the rains start to fall ... which they have!

Cheers ... Laurelle!
