This month we're featuring a collection of interesting and unique plants that can grace any garden or plant collection.

Rhododendron ‘Ebony Pearl’

Ebony Pearl is a unique rhododendron with coppery green foliage that first emerges a deep, dark maroon. Broad, funnel shaped flowers open a soft mauve-pink and fade to white at edges with a ray of reddish-brown spots. Both foliage and flowers compete for best in show. Grows to a smaller size, 3ft by 3ft and like all Rhododendrons prefers a part shade location in moist, but well drained soils. Blooms in April and May

Disporum cantoniens Green Giant

This magnificent perennial was found and named by noted plant explorer, Dan Hinkley, in Sichuan province, china, Its bamboo -like shoots emerge in shades o pink, white and green, maturing to deep green. Fragrant, creamy-white flowers unfurl in nodding bells with the new growth each spring; flowers are followed by glistening black fruit in fall. Prefers full to part shade and grows quickly to 6ft tall and 3-4ft wide. Hardy in USDA zones 7-9 so may require some winter protection or a sheltered location.

Nandina domestica Leucocarpa

It’s not often that a common evergreen shrub like Nandina gets revitalized with a new variety. This one made our horticulturists go WOW! Leucocarpa is an evergreen, upright shrub with bright green foliage during the year (as compared to most Nandinas that have green, orange, yellow & red foliage). Pannicles of white flowers appear in spring and are followed by cream coloured berries in fall. Grows 3-4ft in height and slightly larger spread. Hardy to zone 6.

Leucothoe ‘Curly Red’

This special Leucothoe is an evergreen shrub with curling leaves in colours throughout the seasons. During Autumn, leaves are red and in early winter they become purple. As the plant is very hardy, the tick leathery leaves keep their color during the winter. ‘Curly Red’ is a good cover for shady banks and looks great in mass plantings. It is well suited as an undergrowth plant and mixes well with green foliage shrubs. A fantastic woody subject for mixed containers too! This plant prefers part shade but will tolerate full sun if kept moist. Soil should be moist, acidic and well drained. Stays short – grows to only 16 inches tall and about 18 inches wide. Hardy to zone 6-7

Prunus incisa ‘Little Twist’

This darling little flowering cherry tree features gorgeous double pink, rose-like flowers in large clusters in mid-spring. Branches are twisted and contorted offering off-season interest. Leaves are reddish, then green and turn yellow in the fall. Beautiful ornamental tree for small yards, Asian-inspired landscapes and feature gardens. Ornamental only – no fruit. Prefers to grow in full sun in moist, but well drained soils. Can reach 15ft+ in time.

Skimmia japonica ‘Kew Green’

Another striking evergreen shrub. ‘Kew Gree’ has a compact habit and large clusters of fragrant white to pink flowers. Male variety – plant female skimmia nearby to produce colourful fruit. Prefers part shade and moist, but well drained soils. Hardy to zone 7.

Camellia costei

This striking, white flowering camellia is originally from the forests of south China and produces single flowers in spring. Its elliptical evergreen leaves add great contrast to the blooms. Camellia costei is a great specimen plant or small evergreen tree in the garden. Grows to around 15ft in height and prefers sheltered, part sun locations. Hardy to zone 7.

Bloom-a-Thon Pink Double Azalea

Unlike most Azaleas, the bloom-a-thon series allow you to enjoy months of flowers instead of just weeks. Double pink spring flowers rebloom in mid-summer, and continue to flower until the first hard frost. Prefers part sun and moist, but well drained, fertile, acidic soils. Prune to shape and fertilize after spring bloom. Grows 3-4ft tall and up to 3ft wide.

Russian Tea

This very hardy camellia species is used to produce tea in the plantations of southern Russia. It is a compact, attractive shrub and features fall blooming, white, fragrant flowers and dark evergreen foliage that can easily be made into green or black tea. Prefers full to part sun and well drained, acidic soils. Grows 4-6ft in height. Harvest leaves 2-3 years after planting.
