Posted By: in Perennials

Hellebores are versatile, evergreen perennials and reliable winter blooming favourites. Winter is when they truly come into their own, providing colour when almost nothing else can. Most varieties flower from November until early spring. They are also deer resistant, make ideal woodland plants or groundcovers or they can be used as specimen plants in the garden or in pots. They can also be used as houseplants in cooler temperature homes. As we tend to be more indoors in the winter, plant them in a location where you can enjoy them during your daily travels. For example, near a walkway or entryway. Don’t bury them in the back of the garden where you may miss their spectacular beauty.

This year, Art’s Nursery is offering a multitude of new and interesting varieties including these nine:

How To Grow Hellebores

Hellebores are evergreen perennials that prefer shade to part shade conditions. Provide moist, well drained soils that is rich in organic matter. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Avoid disturbing their roots as they dislike being transplanted. Feed with an acid fertilizer after bloom. If foliage begins to look tattered in summer, prune back to allow new growth to appear for next season.

If you have any questions about Hellebores or would like to add a couple toy our garden, please give us a call at 604.882.1201 or visit Art's Nursery in person. The best selection is mid-February through late March. Please call ahead to confirm availability if you are looking for a specific variety as our selection is always changing.
