In every month and every season, a few plants arrive at the nursery that really catch my eye. Some are brand new, others, tried and true favourites. No matter what, these 5 plant picks for March 2013 are sure to delight!

purple stem sweetbox

Purple Stem Sweet Box

Sarcoccocca hookeriana var dignya ‘Purple Stem’

This lovely Sweet Box brings wonderful fragrance to the winter and early spring garden. Easy care, slowly spreading shrub has ornamental raspberry coloured stems bearing slender evergreen leaves. Masses of highly fragrant pink-tinged white flowers appear in late winter – followed by attractive round blue-black fruit. An ideal taller ground cover in a shady woodland garden. Beautiful when used as a low, informal hedge. Best when planted in full to part shade in moist, but well drained soil. Grows 3-5ft high and wide. Hardy in USDA zones 6-9.

Passion Frost Pieris

Passion Frost Pieris

Pieris japonica ‘Passion Frost’

This evergreen has deep purple influenced rosy-pink, bell -shaped blooms in great abundance that hang in 6 inch clusters over the shrub. Blooms appear in mid-to late spring. Long, pointed, variegated leaves really stand out with a thin white edge and central stripe. Best when planted in full sun to part shade in moist, but well drained acidic soils. Grows 4-5ft in height and 2-3ft wide. Hardy to zone 6.

Jelly Bean Blue Berry

Jelly Bean BlueBerry

Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Jelly Bean’

Jelly Bean is a charming little puffball of a plant producing a prolific crop of large, flavourful blueberries in mid-summer. Berries are medium to large size and have a sweet flavor like homemade jelly. The gorgeous foliage of Jelly Bean features uniquely elongated leaves that range from brilliant to darker greens with highlights of red in cooler climates. Excellent plant for the harvest or even as a mini-hedge along a pathway or in a container. Grows 1-2ft in height in a compact, spherical mound. Best when planted in full sun, in moist, but well drained acidic soils. Hardy in zones 4-8

Luwian Skimmia

Luwian Skimmia

Skimmia japonica ‘Luwian’

This charming, mounding,  evergreen shrub produces light green flower buds leading to flowers that open to cream in spring. Very fragrant. Male variety – can be used to pollinate female Skimmia. Grows 3ft x 3ft. Best in shade to part shade in moist, but well drained soils. Hardy to zone 7.

Kramers Red Heather

Kramer’s Red Heather/Heath

Erica x darleyensis ‘Kramers Red’

Also known as Kramer’s Rote. This woody evergreen groundcover produces masses of magenta flowers in late winter and early spring. Bell shaped flowers bloom on dark bronze foliage. Excellent plant for use in rock gardens, borders, on slopes or as an all-purpose groundcover. Grows 12-14 inches in height and 1-2ft wide. Best when planted in full sun to light shade in moist, but well drained lightly acidic soil. Do not over water or allow to dry out. Use a fertilizer intended for acidic loving plants like Arts GardenPro Rhododendron and Azalea food.
