Ficus carica 'Desert King'
Desert King Fig
Department:
fig-trees
Description
Application/Use
Care/Maintenance
This is the most successful fig for the West Coast temperal areas with wet and cool climate. Fruit is green skinned with strawberry flesh. Sets a large early crop June to Aug. Second crop in warm climates.

Green fruit with pink flesh
Good for the West Coast
Care/Maintenance:
In our climate, fig trees require full sun, in moist but well drained soil. A south or west facing location sheltered from cold and wind is ideal. Avoid planting in low lying frost pockets or areas with poor drainage. Fig trees are self-pollinating; cross-pollination is not required to produce fruit. Figs are capable of producing two crops per year, but in our area the second crop often does not ripen before winter sets in. Allow figs to ripen on the tree. Ripe fruit will be soft and start to bend at the neck. Water young fig trees regularly. Prune in winter to establish a strong branching system. Apply a fruit tree and berry fertilizer in early spring as growth begins.
