Can Japanese Maples Be Grown In The Sun?

Japanese Maples are understory plants and prefer part sun or part shade. With that said, most varieties will tolerate more sun if kept a little on the moist side. Larger leaved varieties tend to be more sun tolerant than the finely dissected lace leaf varieties. Green leaved varieties are also more sun tolerant than variegated types. Golden leaved varieties prefer more shade.
