What Plants Need Acidic Soil?

Due to our rainy climate, most soils in the Pacific Northwest are naturally acidic. The landscape plants that particularly like acidic soils include:

  • Rhododendrons
  • Azaleas
  • Arbutus
  • Camellias
  • Pieris
  • Vaccinium (Blueberries)
  • Heaths & Heathers
  • Viburnum

You can test your soils acidity by using a handy low cost soil pH tester. If you need to make your soil more acidic, there are three easy ways to do this:

  • mix peat moss into your soil
  • Use garden sulphur
  • Use aluminum sulphate
