Not only is this the month with Groundhog Day, you can celebrate your sweetie on Valentines Day and celebrate the finest in winter sports and athletics. Yes, like everyone else in Vancouver, we can't name the name of that sports event either, but at least we can say Go Canada Go! February is also the month when spring bulbs start to peek above the soil. Certain seeds can be planted and the hellebores, camellias and witchhazels are in full glorious bloom. February is a month of awakening, the winter is receeding and the garden in beginning to come alive.
February In Your Garden
Weed. Enough said
Clean up the garden of leaves and debris (unless the debris / leaves are protecting a borderline hardy plant). This will reduce the amount of slugs and snails that may be over wintering. While you are examining your garden be careful not to step on green shoots from bulbs!
Rake your lawn & get rid of dead growth, leaves, twigs and any other winter debris. This will let the light and air get to the soil level encouraging your grass to grow.
If your lawn is not waterlogged you can aerate, top-dress and lime. Yes, in that order too. It is important to do this when the lawn is not wet or frosty or you'll be compacting and damaging your lawn.
Get your lawn mower checked and blades sharpened. Sharp blades cut grass better and contributes to a healthier lawn.
Spray fruit trees using a dormant spray kit. This can also be applied to magnolias, crabapples, flowering cherries and almost any flowering deciduous tree. This will help prevent pests & disease this coming season. Do not spray if the buds are breaking
Clean out bird nesting boxes.
Move and divide any perennials as long as the weather is mild. Replant immediately and water well.
Transplant any existing shrubs you wish to move before they begin to leaf out.
Start thinking about our native pollinators!! They'll need some early food!! Heather, early spring bulbs, Witch Hazel, Viburnum bodnatense are all excellent to have mixed in the garden and great food for the early emergence of our local bee population. Did you know there are more than 80 different types of local bees??!!!
Consider buying a mason bee house. Get your mason bees so you don't miss out. Sometimes supply can be limited. Replacement straws are available now.
Water houseplants sparingly. Continue to repot your house plants if they need it.

Floral Symbolica. As gardening during the dreary days of Winter becomes more of an armchair sport, I thought I'd give you some fun things to do.
Food for thought maybe…even inspiring!
Floral symbolica, the language of flowers! The Ancient Chinese used florographic signs to communicate ideas as did the Egyptians, Assyrrians and Indians. Each plant and flower has a hidden meaning and it is possible to pose a question or give an answer just by handing someone a bouquet of flowers or a leaf!
In eastern lands they talk in flowers,
And they tell in a garland their loves and cares:
Each blossom that blooms in their garden bowers
On its leaves a mystical language wears.
(Riker)
Can you imagine? What is your garden really saying??
My tulips have declared love toward the next door neighbour, but my oak leaved geranium is telling him it's just friendship.
The Linden in the backyard is sending a marriage proposal but my dandelions are just saying 'go'. Hmmm….I feel a garden redesign coming on.
My garden is just too fickle. Possibly not the way to design a whole garden but I think I may send out some messages in my flower pots if I can just figure out how to get them to say "Bring Starbucks".
Here are some plant names and meanings to get you started:
Lemon Balm - sympathy, loving
Sweet Marjoram - blushes
Rosemary - remberance
Yarrow - healing of heartache
Camellia - supreme loveliness
Azalea - romance
Clover - promise
Heliotrope - devotion
Tulip - love declaration
Begonia - watch out, beware
Linden - love and marriage
Striped Carnation - No
Cedar leaf - Life devotion
Dandelion flower - Go
Fern - Magic
Oak-leaved Geranium - friendship
Ivy - marriage
Rose Leaf - you can hope
Moss Rosebud - confession of love
Bay leaf - strength
There are tons of books and websites listing other plants and their meanings.
Have fun with it!!!
Now if I can just scotch tape that coffee bean onto the rose leaf and then maybe add a dandelion… where can I find one at this time of year?! Read This Article Online One of the best ways to dazzle up the dreary season is to plant a Witchhazel in your garden.
Also known as a Hamamelis by horticulturists, these interesting small trees belong to the Hamamelidaceae family of plants and share some characteristics with other plants like Corylopsis and Fothergilla.
Witchhazels are often multi-trunked and vase-shaped, narrow at the base and widening on top. The deciduous leaves are mid-green in colour, ridged in appearance and turn colourful hues of golden-yellow, orange and maroon in autumn. However, a Witchhazel’s most interesting feature is its habit of flowering on bare branches in the middle of winter (usually January and February in Vancouver). The flowers are delicate, dainty, and almost crinkled in texture and spider-like in shape. The blooms vary in size from half to two inches in size and last for several weeks. Flower colour depends on variety, but ranges from pale or vibrant yellow, to coppery-orange or red. For even more interest, the flowers are fragrant – proving a healthy, but subtle fragrance at an otherwise unexciting time of year in the garden.
There are several common varieties of Witchazel that are readily available at Art’s Nursery. These include:
Chinese Witchhazel
Hamamelis mollis
An upright large shrub or small tree with very fragrant golden-yellow flowers that are borne on bare branches in the winter. Leaves are green and downy underneath before turning deep golden yellow in autumn. Grows to 10-15ft. Hardy in zones 4-9.
Arnolds Promise Witchhazel
Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Arnolds Promise’
A lovely Witchhazel variety known for its outstanding fall foliage and large, fragrant bright yellow flowers that appear in winter. Tends to flower early and heavily. Its yellow flowers are amongst the brightest in the group. Grows 10-20ft. Hardy in zones 5-8
Primavera Witchhazel
Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Primavera’
A Witchhazel grown for its abundant canary-yellow scented flowers that are red at the base. One of the earliest varieties of Witchhazel to flower. Also provides a nice yellow fall foliage colour. Grows to 15ft.
Jelena Witchhazel
Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Jelena’
One of the most beautiful witchhazels, Jelena features orangey-red fall foliage colours and coppery-orange fragrant blooms in winter. Petals are red at the base and grade to orange-yellow at the tips. Grows 10-20ft in height. Slightly wider growth habit than many other Witchhazels. Hardy in zones 5-8
Diane Witchhazel
Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Diane’
Diane is one of the best red, almost crimson, flowering witchhazels. Like the others mentioned here, it flowers in winter and features large leaves that turn striking shades of red, orange and yellow in fall. Height: 10-20ft. Hardy in zones 5-8
To grow a Witchhazel, plant them in moist, but well drained, slightly acidic soils rich in organic matter. They prefer full sun but will tolerate light shade. They will tolerate many garden conditions except for areas of extreme heat or heavy alkaline soils. Hardy to Zone 5. For best landscape effect, site them in location visible from the house in fall and winter or in an area where the perfumed flowers can be experienced during the winter. Plant them in front of dark or solid backdrops like large evergreens to create visual contrast.
As a group, Witchhazels are excellent ornamental trees for smaller yards and offer up multiple seasons of interest; notably, colourful fall foliage and fragrant winter blooming flowers.
You can see them blooming yourself in January or February depending on the weather. Contact us at 604.882.1201 or visit Art’s Nursery in person for more information about these wonderful small trees.
