Water them with a garden hose, not a sprinkler. By watering deeply and less often, you encourage the roots of most plants to go deeper - thereby better preparing them for periods of drought. Frequent light waterings will keep roots near the surface making them more susceptible to heat damage. The best time to water is either early in the morning or in the evening. This avoids evaporation and keeps more of the water closer to where the plant needs it.
