Top 12 Deciduous Shrubs For Fantastic Fall Colour

Est Reading Time : 12 min(s)

One of the great pleasures of gardening in the Pacific Northwest is the long, colourful autumn season. From late September through November, gardens across Metro Vancouver come alive with reds, oranges, yellows, and burgundies. While trees often get the spotlight, shrubs are just as important for creating rich layers of fall interest. They bring colour to eye level, fill gaps beneath taller trees, and brighten pathways, patios, and foundation plantings.

This guide highlights twelve outstanding shrubs that deliver exceptional fall colour. All thrive in our Zone 7–8 coastal climate and are readily available at Art’s Nursery throughout the season. The list includes well-known favourites, reliable performers, and a few underused gems that deserve more attention. Whether you want bold reds, golden tones, or multi-coloured displays, these shrubs offer long-lasting autumn beauty with minimal care.

Fothergilla

Fothergilla gardenii, Fothergilla major

Fothergilla earns the top spot for good reason. Its fall display is one of the most vivid of any shrub in the Pacific Northwest, often producing red, orange, yellow, and deep burgundy all on the same plant. Even better, Fothergilla offers four-season interest. In spring, it produces fragrant white bottlebrush flowers; in summer, clean green foliage; and in winter, a sculptural branching pattern.

This Eastern North American native prefers moist, well-drained soil and partial sun. It thrives in the same conditions as hydrangeas, azaleas, and rhododendrons. Compact forms such as ‘Blue Mist’ or ‘Mount Airy’ make excellent foundation shrubs and woodland companions.

Blueberries

Vaccinium spp.

Blueberries may be best known for their delicious fruit, but their ornamental value is just as impressive. In autumn their foliage transforms into a mix of scarlet, orange, and wine-red shades that rival many ornamental shrubs. They are also compact, making them perfect for small gardens, edible landscapes, and containers.

Blueberries thrive in acidic soil and full sun. They pair beautifully with other acid-loving plants like rhododendrons, pieris, and Japanese maples. For the strongest fall colour, look for cultivars such as ‘Bluecrop’, ‘Duke’, ‘Northland’, or ‘Sunshine Blue’.

Smokebush

Cotinus coggygria and hybrids

Smokebush is prized for its rich colour through the growing season. Purple cultivars such as ‘Royal Purple’, ‘Velvet Cloak’, or the hybrid ‘Grace’ offer deep plum foliage all summer before turning fiery orange, red, and gold in autumn. Green-leaf varieties also develop excellent fall tones.

These shrubs grow large—typically 8 to 12 feet—so they are best used as statement pieces in borders or as anchors in large planting beds. Full sun brings out the strongest colouring. Smokebush is drought-tolerant once established and performs reliably in the PNW.

Witchhazel

Hamamelis × intermedia

Witchhazel shrubs are beloved for their winter flowers, but their fall foliage is equally spectacular. Depending on the variety, leaves turn glowing yellow, rich copper, or flame-red. The combination of fall colour followed by fragrant midwinter blooms makes witchhazel a true four-season shrub.

Plant witchhazel in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade, or in bright dappled light. They appreciate moist, well-drained soil and benefit from mulching. Cultivars such as ‘Arnold Promise’, ‘Diane’, and ‘Jelena’ are consistent performers in our region.

Japanese Maples

Acer palmatum

While Japanese maples can grow into small trees, many dissectum varieties remain shrub-sized and fit beautifully into smaller gardens. Laceleaf forms offer elegant branching and finely cut foliage that turns brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow, or gold in fall.

Popular varieties for shrub-sized spaces include ‘Red Dragon’, ‘Crimson Queen’, ‘Waterfall’, and ‘Viridis’. Japanese maples prefer partial sun and rich, well-drained soil. Their compact size and graceful form make them ideal for front-entry plantings, patio corners, and Japanese-inspired landscapes. Although it might seem obvious, green leaf varieties tend to offer the best fall colours, as the red leaf varieties are already red!

Oakleaf Hydrangea

Hydrangea quercifolia

Oakleaf hydrangeas bring bold texture to the garden with their large, lobed leaves and upright form. Their fall colour is outstanding—deep burgundy, maroon, and wine-red tones that persist well into late autumn. As a bonus, their dried flower heads and peeling bark add winter interest.

These shrubs thrive in partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Cultivars such as ‘Snow Queen’, ‘Alice’, and ‘Ruby Slippers’ are particularly well-suited to Pacific Northwest gardens.

Ninebark

Physocarpus opulifolius

Ninebark offers season-long colour and exceptional durability. Purple-leaved varieties like ‘Diabolo’ or ‘Summer Wine’ transition from burgundy to bright orange and red in fall. Golden selections such as ‘Dart’s Gold’ also develop warm autumn tones.

Ninebark is drought-tolerant, fast-growing, and adaptable to full sun or partial shade. Its exfoliating bark provides winter texture, making it a reliable four-season shrub.

Burning Bush

Euonymus alatus

Burning bush is famous for its neon-red fall colour—the kind that can be seen from across the yard. Although considered invasive in some parts of North America, it is still commonly sold and safely grown in British Columbia. Dwarf forms remain compact and are perfect for foundation plantings or mixed shrub borders.

Plant burning bush in full sun for the strongest autumn colour. In shaded locations, their fall display will be softer and less intense.

Red Osier Dogwood

Cornus sericea / Cornus stolonifera

Our native red osier dogwood brings multi-season appeal. Fall foliage ranges from gold to red, but the real show begins after leaf drop when bright red stems become the focus. These stems can glow beautifully against grey winter skies.

Red osier dogwoods thrive in moist soil and tolerate part shade. They are excellent near ponds, rain gardens, or naturalized areas. Regular pruning encourages fresh, brightly coloured stems.

Barberry

Berberis thunbergii cultivars

Barberries offer some of the brightest and most consistent fall foliage. Red, orange, gold, and burgundy varieties make it easy to match your colour palette. Their compact size and natural mounding habit make them ideal for small gardens or landscape borders.

Plant barberries in full sun for the richest colour. They are drought-tolerant and easy to grow but should not be planted where small children or pets may brush against their spines.

Virginia Sweetspire

Itea virginica

Spectacular fall colour is the signature feature of sweetspire—rich burgundy and scarlet shades that persist longer than almost any other shrub. In spring and early summer, it offers elegant arching branches with fragrant white flower spikes.

Sweetspire performs well in partial sun to full sun and enjoys moist, humus-rich soil. The compact variety ‘Little Henry’ is perfect for smaller spaces.

Enkianthus

Enkianthus campanulatus

Enkianthus is a prized shrub in Japanese-style gardens and woodland settings. In spring it produces clusters of small, bell-shaped flowers, but its fall foliage is where it truly shines. Leaves turn bright red, orange, and gold, often in multiple layers of colour.

This shrub thrives in acidic, well-drained soils similar to rhododendrons and pieris. Its upright, tiered habit adds structure and elegance to shaded garden spaces.

The Pacific Northwest offers the perfect climate for shrubs that dazzle in fall. Whether your garden leans toward woodland serenity or bold seasonal displays, these twelve shrubs bring long-lasting colour, structure, and texture to your autumn landscape. Many pair beautifully with Japanese maples, conifers, ornamental grasses, and late-season perennials. As summer winds down, planting these shrubs ensures your garden glows with rich, vibrant hues year after year.
