Few plants capture the beauty and spirit of Christmas quite like the Poinsettia. With its brilliant colours, lush green foliage, and festive appearance, the Poinsettia has become one of the most recognizable and beloved plants of the holiday season. Whether displayed on a dining table, arranged around the Christmas tree, or given as a thoughtful seasonal gift, Poinsettias bring warmth, colour, and Christmas cheer into our homes.
Known botanically as Euphorbia pulcherrima, the Poinsettia is a tropical plant native to Mexico and Central America. In its natural environment, it grows as a large shrub or small tree, but the compact, colourful plants we enjoy at Christmas are specially cultivated varieties developed for indoor decorating.
The history of the Poinsettia stretches back centuries. The Aztecs of Mexico cultivated the plant, using its colourful leaves to produce dyes and its milky sap in traditional remedies. Later, during the 17th century, Franciscan missionaries incorporated Poinsettias into Christmas celebrations and nativity processions. Their natural winter colouring made them a fitting symbol of the holiday season.
The plant eventually became known as the Poinsettia in honour of Joel Roberts Poinsett, an American diplomat who introduced it to the United States in the 1820s. Over the following century, growers and plant breeders developed varieties with stronger stems, fuller shapes, longer-lasting colour, and improved performance indoors.
Today, Poinsettias are among the most popular flowering potted plants sold during the Christmas season. Their combination of traditional beauty, affordability, and versatility makes them a favourite for holiday decorating and gift-giving.
One of the most interesting things about Poinsettias is that their spectacular red, pink, or white displays are not actually flowers! The colourful portions of the plant are specialized leaves called bracts. These modified leaves surround the Poinsettia's true flowers, which are the tiny yellow or greenish-yellow structures clustered in the centre.
The bracts develop their beautiful colours in response to the shorter days and longer nights of autumn. In nature, this allows Poinsettias to flower during the winter months. Modern varieties have been bred to produce particularly vibrant, long-lasting bracts, allowing us to enjoy their beauty throughout the Christmas season and often well into the new year.
While traditional Christmas red remains the most popular colour, today's Poinsettias offer an impressive selection of shades and styles. Classic deep reds are perfect for traditional holiday decorating, while creamy whites and soft ivories complement elegant, contemporary interiors. Pink Poinsettias add a softer touch, and varieties in salmon, peach, and warm golden tones offer something a little different.
There are also beautiful marbled and bicoloured varieties, featuring combinations of red, pink, cream, and white. Some have speckled or splashed patterns, while others feature uniquely shaped or textured bracts.
Poinsettias are available in a range of sizes, from charming miniature plants suitable for small tables and desks to large, impressive specimens that make wonderful seasonal centrepieces. With so many colours and forms available, there is a Poinsettia to complement almost any Christmas decorating theme.
Poinsettias are surprisingly easy to enjoy indoors when given the right conditions. They perform best in a location with plenty of bright, natural light, such as near an east- or west-facing window. A bright room with indirect sunlight is ideal for maintaining healthy foliage and colourful bracts.
Because Poinsettias are tropical plants, they prefer comfortable indoor temperatures, ideally around 18–22°C. Avoid placing them near frequently opened exterior doors, cold windows, fireplaces, heating vents, or other sources of hot or cold drafts. Sudden temperature changes can cause premature leaf drop and shorten their decorative life.
In the mild but often chilly and wet winters of Metro Vancouver, Poinsettias should be treated as indoor plants rather than outdoor Christmas decorations. Even brief exposure to cold temperatures during transportation can damage their foliage, so be sure to protect your plant when bringing it home from the nursery.
Proper watering is one of the most important parts of keeping a Poinsettia looking its best. These plants prefer evenly moist soil but dislike sitting in waterlogged conditions.
Check the soil regularly by touching the surface with your finger. When the top 2–3 cm (approximately 1 inch) feels dry, water the plant thoroughly until excess water begins to drain from the bottom of the pot. Allow the excess water to drain away completely before returning the plant to its decorative container.
Many Poinsettias are sold wrapped in attractive decorative foil or placed inside festive containers. Although these look wonderful, they can trap excess water around the roots. Always remove accumulated water from the foil or decorative pot after watering.
Avoid allowing the plant to become completely dry and wilted, as repeated wilting can cause leaves to drop. Similarly, consistently soggy soil can damage the roots. Rather than watering on a fixed schedule, check the soil every few days and water according to the plant's needs.
With a little attention, a healthy Poinsettia can maintain its colourful display for many weeks, often lasting well beyond Christmas.
Choose a plant with healthy green foliage, strong stems, and brightly coloured bracts. The tiny flowers in the centre should ideally be fresh and only partially open, indicating that the plant is still relatively early in its flowering cycle.
Once home, provide consistent light, comfortable temperatures, and appropriate watering. Fertilizer is generally unnecessary while the plant is in its colourful holiday display. If you decide to keep your Poinsettia after Christmas, occasional feeding with a balanced houseplant fertilizer during active growth can help maintain its health.
Poinsettias can be kept as houseplants throughout the year, although encouraging them to develop colourful bracts again requires a carefully managed period of long, uninterrupted nights in the autumn. For most people, enjoying a beautiful new Poinsettia each Christmas is the simplest and most rewarding option.
Despite a longstanding misconception, Poinsettias are not considered highly poisonous. However, they are ornamental plants and should not be eaten. Consuming leaves or other plant parts may cause mild stomach upset, particularly in children or pets.
Like other members of the Euphorbia family, Poinsettias produce a white, milky sap when their stems or leaves are damaged. This sap can irritate sensitive skin and eyes, so washing your hands after handling broken stems is a good precaution. People with latex sensitivities should be particularly careful. As with most ornamental houseplants, keeping Poinsettias out of reach of curious children and pets is recommended.
