Chamaecyparis are evergreen conifers characterized by their small cones and usually small branches. Young foliage becomes more scale-like as it ages. One of the most popular is Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gracilis', more commonly known as the Hinoki Cypress. This is a wonderful plant for rock gardens and asian inspired landscapes. Another popular specimen tree is the Weeping Alaskan Cedar, or Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Pendula'.
Chamaecyparis are lime and pollution tolerant making them well suited for growing in urban environments, but will grow better in neutral to acidic soil. Full sun is best.
