Hedging Cedars

Arborvitae

When it comes to gardening, nothing is more sought after than privacy. Arborvitae, more commonly known as hedging cedars are by far the most popular plant used as a screen, a windbreak, to muffle sound or to create privacy.

Several plant varieties are commonly used:

  • Smargd or Emerald Cedars - Thuja occidentalis 'Smargd'
  • Excelsa Red Cedar - Thuja plicata 'Excelsa'

All three of these hedging cedars are ideal plants for creating a thick green wall or hedge. Each has different habits and characteristics to be aware of.

All hedging cedars perform best in full sun, in moist, but well drained soil. Apply a transplanter fertilizer during planting and an evergreen food at least 2-3 times a year for best growth and appearance. Prune lightly, but more often to create a healthy, dense, green hedge.
