Fothergilla is a lesser known deciduous shrub that actually has much to offer. Simple oval shaped green leaves appear in spring after masses of beautiful creamy-white bottlebrush flowers finish blooming. In fall, leaves turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange and red brighten otherwise bland areas of the garden.
Fothergilla gardenii is the most common variety available and is best grown in full or part sun and moist average soil. Prune thinnest branches after bloom, if required. This plant is a great choice for backgrounds, borders, hedges and mixed plantings.
