Garden Tools

The right tools can not only save your hours of time and a visit to the chiropractor.  They can also save you money!   It the garden arena, the right tool in the hands of a savvy gardener can render them almost invincible and make them look good too!  The following are a list of my must have tools for the season, the tools that I would never be without:

round nose shovel

Round Nosed Shovel

A good round nosed shovel is my go-to tool.  I sharpen the edge on it so it will cut roots and weeds a bit better.  I can move small trees and shrubs and I can break up weedy ground.  It’s my first weapon of attack against the larger weeds.  I could use those tiny little digging spades like the lady up the street but that would take all day and at least 2 chiropractic visits.

Wheelbarrow, Trugg, Wagon or Tarp

If you are going to work in your garden, you’ll need something to put stuff on or in.  If you need to move a lot of stuff a larger distance you will  need a wheelbarrow or wagon or something with wheels.  If you have a small amount of stuff to get into or out of your garden; a Trugg (a kind of sturdy rubber bucket with handles) or a tarp will work nicely.

by pass pruning shears

Bypass Pruners

There are a wide range of makes and prices.  At this stage of my life with ‘helpers’ who like to cut things that perhaps pruners are not best made for as well as a bit of a forgetful nature, I tend towards the lower price ranges.

hoe

Combination Short Handled Hoe

For sheer brute weeding and chopping force you can’t beat this tool.  Pick one that fits easily in your hand with a nice taper so you can hang on.  It will help you weed as well as quickly dig smaller planting holes as well as smaller furrows for seeds.  Mine is called Jorge.  I’ve had it for 10 years.

bypass loppers

Bypass Loppers

These long handled lovelies are great for cutting branches and vines and especially blackberries.  It makes it easier to do those larger cuts.  A great rule of thumb for pruning is if you have to bite halfway in with the pruners and then seesaw back and forth to cut through.  You are cutting too big a piece.
