How To Grow Dieffenbachia
Dieffenbachia
Also known as the ‘Dumb Cane’ this native of Brazil gets its name from its poisonous sap. It is a popular and attractive houseplant with a single cane that forms several canes as it matures. Leaves are large, streaked, speckled or splashed in green and white.
LIGHT
Bright light but no direct sun is recommended. Turn plant occasionally to encourage even growth. Loss of variegation may indicate too little light. Scorched leaves may indicate too much light.
WATER
Water thoroughly and allow soil to dry out between watering. Water regularly with room-temperature water and prevent roots from sitting in water. Brown leaf tips may be caused by sporadic watering. Drooping leaves indicates dryness.
SOIL
A good quality, all purpose potting mix is recommended. A soilless mix may give you good results as well.
CARE
Poisonous sap causes painful swelling of the mouth and throat, as well as vocal loss if eaten. It also can cause skin irritation. Keep it away from pets or children. Older leaves may yellow and drop - this is normal. If new leaves drop, the plant may be too cold. Fertilize with 1/2 strength fertilizer in Spring through Summer. Feed monthly in winter.
