How To Grow ZZ Plant
Zamioculcas zamiifolia
A tough houseplant with dark green, shiny foliage that can take periods of neglect and still look amazing. Native of East Africa but happy just about anywhere. It tolerates drought, low light, and really low humidity. Grows 1-3ft tall, even indoors.
LIGHT
Does best in bright to moderate indirect light, but will tolerate very low levels of light. Can tolerate direct light, but leaf scalding may occur. Curling leaves, leaning and yellowing may also indicate excess light.
WATER
Like cacti, ZZ plants do better with less rather than more water. Water when the soil has dried out. Overwatering can harm the plant. Yellow or soft foliage may indicate excess water. Dropping leaves can indicate dryness.
SOIL
ZZ plants survive drought by storing water in their thick rhizomes and semi-succulent stems. Use a fast draining mix like Cactus soil. Add sand or perlite to other mixes if you prefer.
CARE
A slower grower that rarely needs repotting. Caring for ZZ plants is easy - leave them alone. They thrive with a lack of care and can survive months without water. They also don’t need a lot of fertilizer. A half strength fertilizer 1-2 times per year is more than enough. All parts of this plant are poisonous. Keep it away from children and pets.
